    Pool Lighting: Beyond the Pool

    July 21, 2017

Pool lighting has come a long way, even from where it was 10 years ago. Fifth generation LED’s create brighter, more vivid colors while using less energy. It’s easy to forget that halogen and fiber optic pool lights were once considered the way of the future.

Well, not for me actually, my pool still has fiber optic lighting, it trips the breaker if the pump is also running, and barely lights up the pool. What was once considered a cutting edge color-changing lightshow is now only a dimly lit memory. It costs so much just to replace the bulb, I'm saving up for the Hayward Color Logic pool light.

Many of us simply do not have it in our budget to replace an existing inground pool light system but that doesn’t mean our pool decks go dark at night. Stunning landscape lighting and patio lighting options abound, at affordable prices. Think outside the box [pool] - landscape and patio lighting can also add dramatic pop to your backyard.

    LED Patio Furniture

The South Beach LED Table is sure to make an immediate impact on your guests when the sun goes down. Paired with LED patio stools, you can really light up the night. You can change colors, choose a light show, or adjust illumination with the hand held remote.

LED pool stoolsAnother equally fun option is the popular LED Pool Stools, shown here. 6 color stools are height adjustable, remote controlled, rechargeable - and they can be used in and out of the pool, fully waterproof.

LED pool and patio furniture may be a little flashy for some pool owners that may be looking for something a little more subtle when it comes to backyard pool deck lighting ideas.

    Safety Never Looked So Cool

Solar powered LED pathway and landscape lights are not exactly a revelation. If you are like me, your first go around with a set was a bit disappointing when you discovered that they weren’t as bright as you had hoped. In the ultimate twist of irony, mine were eventually kicked, crushed and ruined by apologetic guests that “didn’t see them there”.

    Oro floating orb

The ORO LED accent light can be used as a decorative lighting accent, used along pathways, or it can even float in the pool. Oro light has 24 different color options and holds a charge for up to 10 hours. You can plug into any wall outlet to charge, or connect it to the Solar Charger with ground stake.

    How’s the Color Temperature?

So, what exactly is color temperature? Our friend Jeff Wonsetler over at Lightology.com knows a thing or two about lighting and he breaks it down for us:

“Color temperature is measured on a Kelvin (K) scale. You can find the color temperature for a light bulb listed on its packaging. Color temperatures 3500K and above are generally considered to be cooler temperatures that become bluer in tone (towards a clear midday sun) as the value goes up. Temperatures 3000K and below are considered warmer. As values decrease, the light assumes a more amber tone".

Stay away from cooler color temperatures when lighting outdoor landscapes. The bluish tones from cooler temperatures can make environments appear sickly or unnatural, imparting a sense of uneasiness, and being on edge. Instead, opt for lighting with a very warm color temperature: 2700K LED is ideal, and 3000K is okay, too. The 2700K temperature offers a very soothing and natural tone that mimics the warm, comforting glow of a campfire. As such, it is ideal for creating relaxing, comfortable outdoor environments.”

It's definitely something to strongly consider when deciding how you want to illuminate your landscape, pool, and patio.

    LED Rope Lighting

    led light ribbon, low voltage

With the affordability of led rope lights and good quality outdoor waterproof tape you potentially light up your pool deck for less than a hundred dollars. Buy the good stuff however, if you want it to last for many years.

Rope lighting is available in many lengths, and include a remote control with several color changing modes. They are perfect for under lighting or down lighting under an awning or a fence or even hidden neatly along the outline of a deck as above and below, to safely illuminate steps. Rope lighting is vivid and durable (I’ve had mine for 3 years) and look way more professional when tucked neatly out of sight.

    Who Needs Electricity?

There’s always the option to forgo the notion of warm fire like electric lighting for good, old fashioned ACTUAL fire. There are few things more inviting for evening swimming than drying off next to a fire.

A well placed fire feature or firepit or even some simple tiki torches can have a dramatic effect with the added benefit of of warmth, smores, and keeping the bugs away.

    Better than Christmas in July

One of my personal favorite exterior lighting ideas is uplighting the trees and plants. Trees truly take on a whole new life when they are lit up at night. Simple white flood lights shining on that Oak tree in your backyard can can not only transform the tree, but also your entire backyard.

    pool landscape lighting

There is no shortage of RGB LED color changing flood lights available these days. For about $30-$50 each, a high quality LED flood light or two can turn your backyard into a work of art.

    pool lighting

Shining two contrasting lights from opposite sides of the tree can have dramatic results. Some led landscape lights include a remote control with 24 color options and 4 light modes. They are available with standard 115V plugs or can be hardwired into a controller. Waterproof outdoor led lights are a simple way to add some interesting color and fun to your backyard.

Pentair’s IntelliBrite and Hayward’s ColorLogic have certainly revolutionized what can be done with LED Pool Lighting. Color led pool lights controlled from an app, with millions of color combinations, all while using less electricity than a 75 watt light bulb.

So while I save up for the LED color pool light of my dreams, I invested a few hundred in uplighting my backyard, as you can see from the last two photos above.
