The many different types of automatic pool cleaners available at PoolProducts.com

There are three basic types of automatic swimming pool cleaners:

    • Suction-Side Pool Cleaners
    • Pressure Side Pool Cleaners
    • Robotic Pool Cleaners

    Suction-Side Automatic Pool Cleaners

This type of cleaner gets its name because of the suction that's generated by the pool pump, which transforms the pool cleaner into an underwater vacuum! These units are specially designed to move around the pool in a specified pattern, cleaning the entire pool. This is the most popular type of automatic pool cleaner, mainly in use in above ground pools but many are also appropriate for inground swimming pools. Most suction-side pool cleaners have only one moving part, and are an economical choice for first-time pool owners. They're easy to use because they attach to your existing wall skimmer or a dedicated suction port. Suction-side pool cleaners work when your pool pump is running. They pick up dirt and debris and deposit it into your filter system but may reduce some of your surface skimming action while in use. In general, suction-side cleaners are the economical option while offering all the basics to automate the cleaning of your pool. At Specialty Pool Products, we carry a complete line of suction-side automatic pool cleaners, at the lowest prices available.

Advantages of Suction Side Automatic Pool Cleaners:

    • Simple to install and operate
    • Low cost and proven track record

    Pressure-Side Automatic Pool Cleaners

kreepy Krauly pressure-side automatic pool cleaner from PoolProducts.com

Pressure-side pool cleaners feature a hose that you attach to the dedicated return line of your pool (where the water enters back into the pool after passing through the filter). The force of water creates the pressure that gives this type of cleaner its name. That force is used to both move the cleaner around the pool's surfaces and to create a vacuum that sucks up dirt and debris into a bag. These types of automatic pool cleaners sometimes require an additional booster pump which sends added water volume to the cleaner for extra power. Pressure-side cleaners pick up dirt and debris in the pool and deposit it into an attached fine mesh bag and help in distributing clean, filtered water around the pool. Utilizing their own debris bag means that they don't compromise the filter system. They also do not stop your surface skimming action. They tend to be slightly more involved to use than suction-side cleaners, and their mid-range price makes them a great retrofit option.

Advantages of Pressure Side Automatic Pool Cleaners

    • Distributes filtered water around the entire pool
    • Won't clog skimmer or filter with debris
    • Enhances water circulation
    • Fast & efficient

    Robotic Automatic Pool Cleaners

Robotic pool cleaners feature their own filtration system, so they also act as a secondary filter within the pool. And, they are self-contained, meaning that they do not attach to your pump or filter system. This type of cleaner has gained tremendous popularity in recent years because of performance and automation. Many units are programmable and/or able to be operated by remote control. All dirt and debris collected is stored in a bag or cartridge contained within the cleaner. They are electronic in nature and require a standard 110-volt electrical supply, but a built-in transformer steps the power down to a safe and simple 24-volt device. Robotic cleaners seem to be slightly more expensive to purchase relative to other cleaner types on the market, but they scrub, clean and vacuum as they automatically navigate your pool and are a great time-saver! Our Pool Experts can explain more of the features and differences between them, and help you select your perfect Robotic Pool Cleaner.

    Advantages of Robotic Pool Cleaners:

    • Self-contained filtration eases wear and tear on your pump and filter
    • Fastest Method for cleaning your swimming pool
    • Special Features depending on the unit
