Ozone is formed when a third oxygen atom joins the two of a normal oxygen molecule. Ozone can be created by using a generator to split oxygen molecules apart. The free atoms are then able to join with regular oxygen molecules to form ozone. This splitting is typically achieved through the use of intense UV light or corona discharge (CD). That is why spa ozone generators and hot tub ozone generators will be one of two types -- UV or CD.
The reason why ozone generators for spas and hot tubs are so great to use has to do with the fact that ozone is a very effective sanitizer and oxidizer. When the third, loosely bound oxygen atom comes into contact with contaminants, it comes loose and oxidizes the contaminant. In this way, ozone can effectively destroy a wide variety of contaminants found in spas and hot tubs including bacteria, viruses, yeast, mold and algae. Hot tub ozone generators will also oxidize metals such as iron and will eliminate oils.
Since ozone converts back to oxygen very quickly, it is still necessary to use another form of sanitization along with spa ozone generators. That said, however, spa and hot tub ozone generators can significantly reduce the usage of traditional sanitizers such as chlorine and bromine. By using smaller amounts of chemicals to sanitize your spa or hot tub, you will be creating a more comfortable aquatic environment while saving on chemical costs.
Hot tub ozone generators also provide a very safe form of sanitization as ozone is completely natural and bather-friendly. Also, in contrast to traditional sanitizing chemicals, spa ozone generators will not cause any skin or eye irritation. Ozone generators for spas and hot tubs are also safe for equipment and surfaces, and will therefore prolong their life.
